7th May & 9th May
Jean prepares for sex with straight lads in the privacy of their
bedroom. Each straight man is street-cast and reads the script for the
first time live on stage. After each successive man leaves, the cycle
begins to break down.
The Privilege of Witnessing is a piece of dance-theatre about the complex relationships between queer people and DL men (straight men who solicit queer sex).
This piece delves into the underbelly of queer life, confronting our yearning for straightness. It addresses how gender experimental people continue to be an object of attraction, bafflement, exoticisation, and disgust. In short, it tries to understand the trade.
At once thought-provoking, disturbing and funny, the show straddles the live thrill of Ruth Wilson’s Second Woman and the cinematic pace of the film Jean Dielman…, combining dance, ritual, live art and theatre.
Anything could happen when the lads arrive.
Futures Festival is a Pay What You Can Event, with 100% of the box office going directly towards supporting the artists and the work you see on stage. We invite you to consider what you might typically spend on a show, and choose the highest tier you feel comfortable with - every pound helps us champion new voices and bold ideas.
This show is part of Futures Festival, a work-in-process festival curated by Pleasance Associate Artists. Each artist presents a week of work around a theme relevant to them and the work they are making.
This show is part of the week The Future Is HETEROSEXUAL curated by piss/ CARNATION. A week of shows exploring queer futurity, family, and erotics.
